Description

The Financial Skills Coordinator will play a central role in the IRC’s Financial Counseling and Education Program. The IRC in San Diego has operated a Financial Counseling and Education program since 2006. Since that time, the IRC has provided financial counseling to over 1,000 participants and financial education workshops to over 1,500 participants. Participants have reduced their debt by $314,000 and 624 participants established or increased their FICO scores.The Financial Skills Coordinator will help newly arrived refugees gain the knowledge and skills to make sound financial decisions and build assets. This effort will help to reduce financial hardship among low income families while also supporting in building a foundation for future financial security.

National Council of La Raza AmeriCorps: This is an AmeriCorps position through the National Council of La Raza. The service term is until August 31, 2013 with a living stipend of $5,900. Applicants who complete the term of service are also eligible to receive a $2,775 education award.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support classroom trainings on budgeting and bill payment, bank account management, and building credit.
  • Provide direct financial counseling and coaching on common financial challenges for new arrivals, including preparing a household budget, paying bills successfully, resolving billing disputes, and enrolling in low-income discount programs.
  • Accept applications for loan products, including credit-building microloans; assist clients with completing applications and ensure accuracy of information.
  • Enter all client demographic and program outcome data in a timely fashion into IRC’s ETO database system

Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree, preferably in business or related field
  • Fluency in a Arabic, Somali, Vietnamese, or Spanish a plus
  • Prior experience working with diverse individuals in a multi-cultural setting preferred
  • Prior experience volunteering or working in social service and economic development programs a plus
  • Must be highly motivated, detail-oriented and very flexible.
